Well, for the first post for this blog, I'll put on my review about a animated feature film that i just finished watching, 5 centimeters per second.
It compelled me to blog again. Why? Nothing. I just felt that I should. 'Cause while I was watching the film, I can't help but compare the film to myself. I kinda see myself in the main protagonist. And I know that this film has been blogged by numerous people, but I just want to make one of my own.
That said, let's begin. 5 Centimeters per Second is about the story of Takaki Tono and Akari Shinohara, two childhood friends who grew very close to each other.
However, Akari was forced to transfer to Tochigi, due to her parents' job. The two of them still continued to keep in touch through writing letters, but despite their feelings toward each other, they still drifted apart, inevitably. Soon, Takaki found out that he and his family will be moving to Kagoshima. He then decided to meet Akari since they will be too far away from each other to see each other when he moves. With a letter holding his feelings toward Akari, he proceeds to meet Akari. However, Takaki lost that letter on his way to Akari's. They finally met, shared their first kiss, and realized that they will never be together again. At dawn, Takaki then leaves, regretting that letter that was lost, while Akari still holding the letter he intended to give him.
And so ends the first part.
I was deeply struck with this first episode, since it reflected so much on what happened to me in real life. But, even without that, I'm sure that this has still touched me all the same. It clearly showed the pain and hardships of long-distance relationships, proving that absence makes the heart grow fonder.
The second part didn't make so much of an appeal to me, since I was really focused on the relatonship of Takaki and Akari, and was anxious if they will still be together again. It was about the life of Takaki in his third year in high school. Kanae Sumida, one of Takaki's classmates, has had a crush on Takaki since middle school, but never had the courage to tell him. She always spends her time with Takaki, but over time has observed that Takaki was always looking at a distance, searching for something far away. Because of this, Kanae realized that Takaki will never see her, thus deciding not to confess her feelings. And all throughout that time, Takaki has had recurring dreams with a girl he cannot make out the face at first, but was later revealed as Akari. Thus the title of the second part, "Cosmonaut."
In the third and last part, Takaki, Kanae and Akari has all gone their separate ways. Takaki became a computer programmer, Akari getting ready for marriage, while it is not said what happened to Kanae. Takaki is still longing for Akari, and this caused his life to go astray. Because of all this, Takaki decided to quit his job.
One day, Takaki and Akira passed each other, and recognized each other across train tracks. They both paused to look back, but the trains cut them off. After the trains passed, Takaki found out that the woman(Akira) was gone. After a pause, he then smiles and continued walking.
So there, even though I kinda told the story, it's still not enough to describe how beautiful this story is. It stated plainly love, in its simplest form. In my opinion, this may be one of the best love stories.
